A largest public sector undertaking owned exclusively by the Government of India, Indian Railways has been serving people untiringly since its origin in the pre-independence period. The railway is known for its extensive network of routes, which connect all the rural, suburban, urban and hilly regions in the country. Keeping up with the demands of people, Indian Railways has improved bringing in additional and new routes, new trains, additional compartments, and online booking of tickets and gathering information. Splitting into 17 zones, it manages the operations of over 18000 passenger and freight trains and 8000 railway stations.

One can travel booking tickets in these trains and it can be done online four months in advance. The online booking of tickets can be done on the IRCTC website, which takes care of the reservation and tourism sectors of the railway. People who want to access the portal are required to register their names to get a unique user name and password, which can be used to reserve tickets and gather information.
